Abstract

This collection contains twenty letters written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), that either discuss a variety of subjects, such as the Tavistock House theatricals, financial help for orphans, or the 'Ragged School Movement', or provides insight into his personal life, including the health of his wife, the cadetship for one of his sons, and his brother-in-law’s funeral expenses.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains twenty letters written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), that discuss a variety of subjects, among them details concerning the Tavistock House theatricals and rehearsals for "Turning the Tables", and the plight of the poor in England. In other letters, Dickens elicits help for orphans from the Gentlemen of the Stock Exchange, confirms or declines invitations, and expresses his interest in the Ragged School Movement. Also included in the correspondence are several letters that provide glimpses into Dickens’s domestic life, including the future cadetship for one of his sons and his wife’s health.
