Abstract
This collection, dating primarily from 1987 to 1997, documents the activities of the Lafayette Day Committee, now the Massachusetts Lafayette Society, whose mission is to organize the annual Lafayette Day Celebration in Boston, educate the public about the contributions of the Marquis de Lafayette to American Independence, and encourage Franco-American friendship. The collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, invitations, programs, news clippings, and photographs.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection documents the activities of the Massachusetts Lafayette Society, previously referred to as the Lafayette Day Committee, from 1987-1999, particularly its planning meetings, efforts to erect a statue of Lafayette in Boston, and annual Lafayette Day celebration. Of note are the meeting minutes from the planning meetings and the correspondence of Marthe Biron Peloquin, who orchestrated the cooperation of La Société La Fayette, the French counterpart of their society, in order to include a descendant of Lafayette in the yearly celebrations. Also included are materials from related Lafayette and Franco-American societies, some of whose participants were members of the Lafayette Day Committee, news clippings, and photographs.
